Disease Surveillance
The region is inhabited by nomadic pastoralist that keeps large herds of livestock which inadvertently leads to a potential threat of disease outbreaks. Furthermore, case history identifies mange, Sarcoptes scabiei parasite as an emerging and re-emerging threat to the survival of giraffes in northern Kenya.
As a precaution measure, the Somali Giraffe Project in partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service Vet unit, we monitor the prevalence of zoonotic and other opportunistic diseases in giraffes. We also provide the local communities with vet services and ascarids to control and curb potential disease outbreaks.
