Geri Tracking

Geri is the Somali word for the reticulated giraffe.

The Geri Tracking Project is SGP’s flagship satellite-collaring program aimed at understanding how Somali giraffes move through vast three border counties (Garissa, Wajir and Mandera) of North-Eastern Kenya. To date, 50 adult giraffes have been successfully collared, with 30 collars deployed between 2023–2024 and an additional 20 collars deployed in 2025–2026, making this the largest giraffe collaring program in the Horn of Africa.

By integrating movement data with field demographic data and Photo-ID monitoring, Geri Tracking reveals giraffe movement patterns and routes, seasonal ranges, and core habitats. These insights directly inform corridor protection, land-use planning, and targeted conflict-mitigation programs, ensuring conservation actions are data driven and evidence based.
